I'm sure it's a cyclical thing, it's just that now we live in the future, there doesn't seem to be many people imagining what might come next. As a sci-fi fan I find this frustrating.varalys the darkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17032083859598898676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2243012679315072030.post-40480481836148344142014-10-17T18:06:01.630+01:002014-10-17T18:06:01.630+01:00Tattoos and cigarettes... we used to be so darned ...Tattoos and cigarettes... we used to be so darned edgy. But now we have left the decade of edgy and entered the decade of kawaii, and the world and her mum have tattoos. The world used to be dark, but now it's candy-floss pink and every emotion has a cute picture of a cat to illustrate it.Lucy McGoughhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11343777122050849475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2243012679315072030.post-86606569082345630272014-10-17T16:43:50.394+01:002014-10-17T16:43:50.394+01:00You know, I did think of describing it as Zeerust,...You know, I did think of describing it as Zeerust, but then would have gone off on another massive tangent about what that meant. I think as it works as both with it being designed as such a close future, but it definitely is Zeerusty too.

And I don't think the comic goes by without a single scene that doesn't have at least one of them holding a fag. But as this was written in the mid-90's I assume this was more Ellis making a statement about the characters, ie: they are too cool to care about what smoking does to them!varalys the darkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17032083859598898676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2243012679315072030.post-84876340837473920112014-10-17T15:12:08.143+01:002014-10-17T15:12:08.143+01:00He gets my approval for using 'comprises' ...He gets my approval for using 'comprises' correctly, and for the protagonists' relationship and the language they use to each other. Seems the future is more liberal in some ways than in others.

I think it's zeerust, not an unintentional period piece. It's a future that's become dated (so many wires!).

I wasn't shocked by the breasts in that picture, but I was shocked by the fact that all three of them were smoking. And not even e-cigs! Tony says that all of Philip K Dick's novels have characters who smoke like chimneys, because he could imagine all sort of warped and scary stuff going on in the future but couldn't imagine that people would ever stop smoking.

But the bit about the information junkies... that's me and my HTC One Mini right there.
